Bora Shabaa Refugee Community Organisation

Bora Shabaa (“Better is the Aim”) is an organisation of refugees from D. R. Congo who came to Hull through the Refugee Gateway Programme.

Having come to feel part of the Hull community, we desire to become more involved in the social affairs of the community as a way of addressing problems caused by cultural differences and fear of the unknown.  Our refugee community could better understand the reasons behind the prejudice we face, but similarly, the greater Hull community should know what has motivated us to become refugees and accept to live thousands miles from our ancestors.  With these ideas in mind, we have met, assessed the needs of our community and formed the conclusions and plans of the text below.  The first project we have designed centres on the problem of “Social and Cultural Inclusion.

Bora Shabaa was founded on 4th April 2007, to supporting the needs of Congolese refugees and encourages their participation the name of the Organisation ‘Bora Shabaa’ was selected as it reflects the aims and objectives we intend to achieve.
Bora Shabaa means Better is the Aim.

Organisation History
Our initial aim was to provide access to computer training and ICT and this was established through grant funding and the facilities were hosted by ARKH. The organisation suffered a set back when the computers were stolen from the building. We met to reorganise and re-plan and reached the decision to move from ARKH to alternative premises. We developed a problem analysis, needs assessment and a project frame work from which we designed the other projects we were planning. We then waited until the insurance company provided the money to purchase our new computers.

Activities
Community development for families, children and young people:
Our organisation has run several trips and activities throughout the last year which have been well attended and evaluated. We ran a youth dancing club, trips and other activities for children to visit different areas in England. We have successfully run 3 trips to different places; York Railway Museum, Chester Zoo and Norwich.

As part of our education programme we are also part of the Refugee Talk Team which visits different communities to give talks about refugees’ existence and terminologies.

I) This list underneath details our achievements and future goals:

II)               The organisation has 9 computers which are all laptops to avoid the use of a big space and for the security of the equipment. We have a dedicated team who commit their time on a voluntary basis to our activities. We are members of Hana, D.O.C, Community Enterprise Centre, H.Y.C.V.S.

a.      And this will provide us with the chance for our community to develop and share its skills

b.      Most of our projects involve working with Children aged 5 years to 14 years and also vulnerable adults.  For this reason all of our volunteers are C.R.B checked before they start working with us. We have a child protection policy in place. We have also secured some youth funding from Kingston Youth Centre, Hull Children Fund, Unltd ward. The project is doing very well and seems to be a project with a good future.
